Mistakes you should avoid when renovating or designing a bathroom

When we consider the design of a house for construction or move into one that is already finished, the bathroom is not exactly the room to which we usually pay the most attention. Instead, we give more prominence to other spaces such as the kitchen, living room or bedroom.

But the truth is that having a well-distributed bathroom is extremely important. Hence, it is a space that is more susceptible to undergoing the occasional renovation, especially when we have been using it for a while and realize its shortcomings. If you are thinking about renovating your bathroom, or studying the design of a new one, take note of the mistakes you should avoid so that the result is satisfactory, functional and aesthetic.

If you are going to renovate a previously built bathroom, a very common mistake is wanting to relocate the toilet. While this is possible, it is not highly advisable. Firstly, because it is an expensive job that will increase your budget. But, in addition, you increase the risk of suffering blockages, breakdowns and bad odors by not respecting the original downspout. Think very carefully if the change is worth it.

You will go to the bathroom several times a day to wash your hands, teeth, face, comb your hair, apply your creams, put on makeup, shave or whatever is appropriate. That's why it's important that it fits you at a comfortable height, so you don't have to strain your back. Furthermore, it is common to choose a sink guided only by aesthetic reasons, believing that they all fulfill their function equally. Nothing could be further from the truth. If the sink is too small, you will soak everything on the outside when you wash your face. Likewise, the faucet should be proportional to the sink and be right in the center.

Again, don't let aesthetic criteria cloud functionality. Think carefully about how many people will use the bathroom and all the items stored there – cosmetics, hygiene products, hair tools, towels, toilet paper and even household cleaning products – to ensure you have enough storage.

Take into account the location of light points, both natural and artificial. Think about the possibility of installing several strategically placed spotlights for better ambient lighting. As for the plugs, make sure you move them far enough away from the water to avoid any accidents.

If you have little space, it is common to try to cut it into the surface of the shower. But the truth is that this could lead to a very impractical and uncomfortable shower. Check that it has the necessary space and that its surroundings are well waterproofed to avoid moisture. The screen must correctly isolate the water and the floor must be well inclined so that it drains as it should.
