Marta Rota and the passion for sewing

Colorful flowers and clients who are friends filling the rooms of the Pedralbes palace in Barcelona. Marta Rota could not imagine a better setting to present, in two sessions, Her Floral Story, the title of the spring-summer collection from the Tot-Hom brand.

More than half a century ago, Rota created the firm because “Tothomté dret a ser guapo” (everyone has the right to be handsome). And that is what he continues to think about when he designs the dresses “so that a woman can easily be well dressed, because that gives you security,” he told this newspaper after the show.

Every detail of the garments presented exuded Marta Rota's passion for sewing, a passion that she has passed on to her two daughters, Alejandra and Andrea. “For me it has been a reward to be able to work with my daughters. They bring youth, and I bring experience. And I'm starting to delegate to them,” says the designer.

Tot-Hom presented a romantic, colorful and comfortable collection, with color contrasts such as turquoise and purple or orange and fuchsia, but also with minimalist touches and with the tones of the brand's DNA, such as raw whites and stone. Many wide and ankle-length pants, ultra-feminine shirts finished with lace, short jackets, marked waists and many fresh boho-style dresses. And bring back the pleated or ruffled skirts.

For the night, flowers are still very present, just as for the day, as well as lace and rhinestone embroidery and layers of chiffon and feathers. And the color gives way to pale tones.

After the show, Marta Rota wanted to celebrate the new collection with a dinner at the Il Giardinetto restaurant. The menu was baptized Millennial Olive Trees, and its preparation included different premium oils from Priordei, from Priorat, a brand that, like Marta Rota, has been passionate about its craft since 1789. Even the surprise dessert was a reinterpretation of bread with chocolate, salt and, of course, oil, made by another pastry enthusiast such as Christian Escribà, who was accompanied by his wife, Patricia Schmidt.

Dessert was not the only surprise of the evening: before dinner, Begoña Alberdi performed Marinela and O mio caro bambino. The soprano of the pandemic (because she sang out the window every afternoon, after applauding the health workers), demonstrated at the Tot-Hom dinner that, at just turned 60, her passion for music and life is still intact , despite the adversities that he has had to experience. While she sings, Alberdi caresses the ring finger, where she wears her ring and that of her husband, “the love of my life,” who died three years ago.

Eulàlia Ramon, another of the guests, is also moved when talking about her husband of 30 years, Carlos Saura, who died a year ago. “The house we live in in Collado Mediano is full of his memories, of the drawings he made for me and signed, so that they would have more value,” she said. I would like to turn it into a residence for young talents,” explains the actress. Grandmother of two children, children of her daughter Anna, Ramon is immersed in directing and with excellent reviews. Her short film Divine Accounts was nominated for the latest Goya, and she attended the gala, wearing an elegant black velvet dress and a cape, precisely by Tot-Hom.
