Malia, Barack Obama's daughter, debuts on the Sundance Festival red carpet as a film director

Malia Obama has begun her professional career in the world of cinema in an exceptional way. The eldest daughter of former United States President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama is no longer that shy girl who dazzled half the world during her father's presidency. Now, the 25-year-old has taken a giant step in her professional life, leaving everyone speechless with her presence at the Sundance Festival.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michelle Obama's daughter made her debut this past Wednesday on the red carpet at the Sundance Festival. The young director presented her first fiction short film titled The Heart at the well-known independent film festival created by Robert Redford in Park City, Utah.

As the aforementioned media revealed, the young woman has been in charge of writing the script and directing the audiovisual piece, which tells the story of "a grieving son, whose mother left him a singular request in her will." The short film was presented on Wednesday and will be screening throughout the week.

Barack Obama's eldest daughter gave various interviews in which she gave a multitude of details about the topics that this audiovisual piece addressed. ''The film is about lost objects, lonely people, forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to discover where tenderness and closeness can exist in these things," said the young filmmaker.

''We hope you enjoy the film and it makes you feel a little less alone, or at least reminds you not to forget the people who are," she added. However, and despite the fact that this has been her great debut as a director , the short film had already been screened previously.

The film could be seen at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado and at the Chicago International Film Festival, where it was awarded in the category of best live action short film. Likewise, the 25-year-old finished her film studies at Harvard University in 2022 and during 2023 she participated as a screenwriter in the limited horror series Swarm, created by Donald Glover.
