Thousands of colleagues and followers of Jane Birkin have come to say their last goodbye to the artist at her funeral, an act that was held this morning at the Saint-Roch church in Paris.
At the ceremony it was possible to see his daughters, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, but also important celebrities and public figures from the French country, such as: Carole Bouquet, Catherine Deneuve, Benjamin Biolay, Etienne Daho, Isabelle Huppert, Yvan Attal and Chiara Mastroianni, among others. Important figures from the world of politics such as Brigitte Macron and the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, have also been present.
The front patio of the church was covered with flowers as a symbol of the national commotion caused by the announcement of the death of the singer and actress, who died last Sunday, July 16, at the age of 76 of natural causes.
"Thank you for loving us so much. (...) I can see your souls in pain. I already see the emptiness that leaves us. She is my mother, our mother, your mother," her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg read very emotionally at the ceremony.
Her other daughter, Lou Doillon, also spoke at the funeral rite and shared with those present some of the many moments she lived with her mother. The young woman ended up thanking her: "Mom, thank you for all those adventures. Thank you for not having been ordinary, reasonable and docile. I'm already fed up with this peaceful and reasoned world of tomorrow."
The ceremony lasted about 90 minutes, and when it was over, the coffin was carried to the sound of La Javanaise, while hundreds of hands applauded relentlessly. Although access to the church was restricted for the English artist's family, friends and colleagues, a giant screen was installed so that her audience could be present at Birkin's last goodbye. Many other songs also played in this tribute to the artist, such as Et quand bien même.
According to an AFP journalist, more than 1,500 people followed the funeral from the giant screen. A highlight of the act was when, before the ceremony began, a black and white portrait of Jane Birkin was shown, in which she appeared with a big smile.
