'Berlin', renewed for a second season on Netflix

By the time Berlin ended with Andrés de Fonollosa (Pedro Alonso) and Damián (Tristán Ulloa) sitting in a bullring, commenting on how convenient it would be to execute a new robbery, it was clear: the spin-off/prequel to La Casa de papel had not been conceived as a closed miniseries but rather could have a continuation. And, after the success, Netflix has officially announced that it will have a second season.

The renewal of the series also comes with the confirmation of who will be part of the Berlin band and, luckily, there will be no changes. Pedro Alonso will reprise the role of the thief who will rob the Madrid Mint and Stamp Factory in the future; Tristán Ulloa will once again be the philanthropist professor who gets carried away by Berlin's crazy plans; Begoña Vargas and Julio Peña Fernández will once again be Cameron and Roi; and Michelle Jenner and Joel Sánchez will be as Keila, an electronic engineer without much people skills, and Bruce, a man of action.

The participation of these last two couples has an interesting element: there are only six of the Berlin thieves and they are all characterized by their romantic, sexual or sentimental life. Alonso as a hopeless romantic, Ulloa as a man who has just been abandoned by his wife, and Vargas and Peña and Jenner and Sánchez as two couples from the robbery of the largest auction house in Paris.

It is not, however, an express production. Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the creators, are working on the new chapters thinking about stands in 2025. They have time to plan another heist.

It is a matter of time before other additions are announced. And, after seeing Itziar Ituño and Najwa Nimri again as Raquel Murillo and Alicia Sierra, whom we had seen in Money Heist, the first season hinted that they could return.

At the end of the day, it is worth remembering that in Berlin they have shown themselves as friends who are delighted to work together and in Money Heist they openly detested each other, with Nimri as a practically psychopathic law enforcement agent. It's time to see when and why they fell out, right?

Berlin, since it premiered on Netflix on December 29, has been one of the most viewed series on the non-English language platform. It reached the Top 10 in 91 markets, has 348 million hours watched among users and is estimated to have accumulated 53 million views of the entire first season. It is, in fact, the ninth most watched non-English language series in the history of Netflix, with still possibilities of climbing positions.
