The unemployment rate in Catalonia drops to 8.4%, the best figure in 15 years

According to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the unemployment rate in Catalonia has fallen by almost two points in the second quarter of 2023, standing at 8.44%, the lowest figure since the third quarter of 2008.

The total number of unemployed at the end of June was 336,800 people, the lowest figure since the second quarter of 2008, 70,400 less than in March of this year.

Catalonia has surpassed the employment record with 3,654,000 workers, generating 132,700 more jobs between April and June, the first autonomy at the national level.

The main reason why the unemployment rate has fallen is the historical drop in female unemployment, which has dropped more than two points (to 8.35%), today even below that of men (8.52%) .

Compared with the rest of the autonomous communities, Catalonia is the second, behind the Balearic Islands, where unemployment has fallen the most compared to the first quarter of the year.

Ricard Bellera, Secretary of Labor and Economy of the Workers' Commissions of Catalonia, has celebrated the data from the EPA for the second quarter. "These are spectacular data," he highlighted.

Bellera has described the occupancy figures as very positive and has stated that an improvement in the quality of occupancy has been detected. She assures that the temporary employment rate has dropped seven points, to 14.27%, although partial employment is still three times higher among women than among men.
