The new threat to Tesla will arrive in Europe: an all-terrain electric car as affordable as the Model Y

What seemed like an unequal competition is beginning to change. Although Tesla has launched the Cybertruck on the market, Rivian, which until now had a limited catalog, has not stood by. Thus, the American brand is beginning to gain ground in the electric sector with its already well-known R3 and the recently presented R2.

The Rivian R2, in particular, is designed to be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y. With a design that combines the robustness of an SUV with dimensions adapted to European tastes, the R2 measures 4.71 meters long, somewhat less than its Tesla counterpart.

This more restrained size does not compromise its adventurous nature; On the contrary, it incorporates features designed for off-road enjoyment, such as pronounced wheel arches, short overhangs and generous ground clearance that promise good off-road capability.

The R2 has not only been designed with adventure lovers in mind, but also with a practical approach for everyday use. The interior reflects Rivian's minimalist design philosophy, with multiple storage compartments and folding seats that create a flat surface, ideal for camping or transporting bulky items. In addition, details such as the Rivian flashlight hidden in the doors add functionality to the model.

From a technical point of view, Rivian promises great variety and performance. The R2 will be offered with two battery sizes and three engine configurations: one with rear-wheel drive, another with two-motor all-wheel drive and the most powerful, with three motors and all-wheel drive, which guarantees acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.

Although specific details regarding the range of the models are still being worked out, the smaller battery option aims to offer around 480 km of range, placing the R2 in a competitive position within its segment.

In terms of availability and price, the Rivian R2 will initially launch in the United States in mid-2026, with a starting price of around $45,000. Its arrival in Europe is scheduled for the following year, in 2027, with a planned base price of around 42,000 euros, which will place it as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y in the European market.

Production will take place at the Rivian plant in Normal, Illinois, and customers interested in purchasing this model can now make advance reservations with a refundable deposit.
