PowerCO gigafactory will award construction works "in the coming weeks"

The CEO of PowerCO Spain, Thomas Dahlem, announced this Tuesday, at the eMobility Expo World Congress held at Feria Valencia, that the award of the construction works of the Sagunt plant, with an initial power capacity of 40GWh, will occur "in the coming weeks."

Without going into details of the process managed by the purchasing department, the company manager has assured that "we will begin the production of batteries as promised in 2026 and in the coming days or weeks we will be ready to start producing most of the infrastructure". Thus, 2024 will be the year of construction of the warehouses that will be part of the plant, in the image and likeness of the Salzgitter plant.

Although the person in charge of the company has not commented on details of the process for choosing construction, there is the intention to take local suppliers into account. In fact, the company has maintained contacts with supplier companies through the Business Confederation of the Valencian Community on various days. As the same company has explained, in the future Seat-Volkswagen gigafactory in Sagunt there is a business volume valued at 8,000 million euros at stake.

Likewise, this Tuesday Dahlem also explained that next year the equipment will be installed in the factory to begin producing the cells in 2026, thus fulfilling the schedule to which the firm committed when announcing its million-dollar investment in the Valencian Community. And although the capacity is established at 40GWh, this could be expanded to 60GWh, although Dahlem has indicated today that the standardized production of batteries will be "however the electric car market goes."

After the completion of the first urbanization works and the upcoming construction of the plant, work on one of the fundamental works for the development of the Sagunt industrial and logistics park is also accelerated. The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, made reference to it at the inauguration of eMobility when he indicated that "in the coming days" the construction works of the Sagunt intermodal platform will be signed, a work that is fully financed by the Generalitat Valenciana with its own resources. Awarded to the UTE Rover Infraestructuras, S.A., Becsa, S.A. and Rover Rail, S.A., for an amount of 98.1 million euros and a completion period of 24 months, the start date of the works is March 1.

With this award, it is expected that the urbanization works of the Parc Sagunt II business park will be completed on August 3, 2026, in compliance with the commitments acquired, while the intermodal platform will be operational on its railway side in March 2026.
