New DGT DNI-Car: what is it and which drivers should carry it in the car?

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) and the Vehicle Rental Business Federation (Feneval) have presented this Tuesday the DNI-Car, a new service that allows vehicle rental companies to digitize the documentation of the cars they own. From now on, the users of a rented vehicle will not have to carry the car's documentation in physical format, but it will be securely digitized and they will be able to access it through a QR code.

One of the reasons that this documentation has been digitized is the fact that, according to Feneval estimates, between 6,000 and 12,000 rental vehicles are stolen each year. The fact that the lessees have the obligation to carry the original or certified documentation of the car in paper format facilitated vehicle theft. The thieves used to rent high-end cars and, once they had the circulation permit and the technical sheet, they sent them to other countries to be able to sell them.

The digital documentation of the vehicle -circulation permit and ITV file- will have the same validity and legal effects as on paper, provided that the information on it matches the data that appears in the DGT Vehicle register. In addition, you can check the status of the vehicle, that is, whether or not the vehicle has a theft report.

The general director of Traffic, Pere Navarro, has highlighted the comfort that carrying the documentation in digital format means for the user of a rental vehicle. He has compared it with the advantages provided by the miDGT application, which allows you to carry the car documentation downloaded to your mobile. To make this possible, the DGT has published an instruction by which Traffic will allow these companies to safely digitize the documentation of the vehicles they own.

Feneval is committed to helping companies in the sector and their companies to digitize documentation in a safe, transparent and accessible way. Once the documentation is securely digitized, it will generate a QR code that will be valid exclusively for the duration of the rental contract and from which the vehicle documentation will be downloaded. After its completion, the QR code will be deactivated and the documentation will no longer be available.

Consulting the QR code will give access to the HTML page where the links for digital viewing of the documentation will be displayed. By clicking on these, the State Security Forces agent will be shown the vehicle's documentation, as well as the vehicle's status, which may be active (correct for circulation) or suspended (due to theft).

Juan Luis Barahona, executive president of Feneval, highlighted the step forward that the implementation of the DNI-Car will mean for the sector. "It is a very important step not only in terms of sustainability and security, but also immediacy and speed, as it will mean for companies to have the vehicle documentation in a single day compared to the three or four that were necessary with physical support" .
