Diesel prices fall for the first time in three months

The price of diesel finally leaves the path of increases. The cost of a liter has dropped this week to 1,682 euros, from 1,688 the previous week, according to the European Union Oil Bulletin published this Thursday. It is a slight decrease, 0.33%, but it serves to break the trend of fourteen weeks of increases, more than three months.

In the case of gasoline, the decrease has been more pronounced, 1.88%. Thus, it goes from 1,752 euros to 1,719 euros. In this fuel the falls already began last week, also after three months.

With the prices of this last week, filling a 55-liter tank of gasoline costs 94.54 euros, compared to 96.36 euros the previous week. For its part, a tank of a diesel vehicle entails an expense that amounts to 92.51 euros, slightly below the 92.84 euros of the last reference last Thursday.

In any case, the price of both fuels continues above the levels at which it was before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine due to the Russian invasion, which began on February 24, 2022 and, in the case of diesel, It was 1,479 euros per liter, and, for gasoline, 1,594 euros per liter.

In any case, despite the upward trend in recent months, they have not reached the highs they recorded more than a year ago, when in July 2022 gasoline reached 2,141 euros and diesel 2.1 euros.

The price of fuel depends on multiple factors, such as its specific price (independent of that of oil), the evolution of crude oil, taxes, the cost of raw materials and logistics, and gross margins. Furthermore, the evolution in the price of crude oil is not directly transferred to fuel prices, but rather does so with a time lag.

The outbreak of the conflict in Israel and Palestine threatens to put more pressure on the price of crude oil, which had already been rising due to the cuts of clear actors, mainly Saudi Arabia. Although in the day following the Hamas attack Brent rose 4%, in the following days it has moderated, even with falls.
