Catalonia registers its highest occupation by creating 26,500 new jobs in June

The month of June has left the highest employment figure recorded in Catalonia in history, with 3.7 million workers, adding 26,548 jobs, according to data published this Tuesday by the Ministries of Social Security and Labor. The first half of 2023 has ended with the fifth consecutive monthly increase and the second all-time record in a row.

Unemployment has also chained the fifth monthly drop with a reduction of more than 6,359 people. Therefore, the total number of unemployed stands at 329,744, the best figure recorded in a month of June since 2008, when there were 311,422 unemployed.

"Unemployment falls and we break a new employment record. The Government continues to be committed to generating more work and more opportunities," the Minister of Economy and Labor, Roger Torrent, assured on Twitter.

The world of work usually performs well in June thanks to the tourist boost from the summer season. The affiliation has always grown in this month since there are records. Unemployment usually falls in June, as it has done in the last three decades, with the exception of 2007, 2008 and 2020, which were marked by major crises.

Regarding job creation, of the 26,500 jobs created, the majority were in Girona, with around 9,200, compared to 7,600 in Barcelona, ​​5,800 in Lleida and slightly less than 4,000 in Tarragona, in round numbers.

For its part, the drop in unemployment in June was felt in all sectors of activity. In the services sector, 237,157 unemployed were on the lists, which represents a decrease of 5,106 people. In the industry sector the decrease was 630, in the construction sector 247 and in the agriculture sector 162.

"We do not see any cooling. We do not have a crystal ball, but there is nothing to suggest that a slowdown situation is going to occur," said the Secretary of Treball of the Generalitat, Enric Vinaixa.

Women continued to be the majority on employment services lists and remained below the threshold of 200,000 stops for the fourth consecutive month. In the last 30 days the unemployment lists have lost 3,082 women and 3,277 men.

The presence of those under 25 years of age on the unemployment lists continued to drop, falling to 18,323 unemployed. The data is very similar to last year, with only 117 less unemployed. As for foreigners, Catalonia closed the sixth month of 2023 with 64,507 fewer unemployed than the previous one.
