One of the most exciting meetings in a newsroom is the daily meeting of the management team to decide the topics that we are going to highlight in the digital and paper editions. And there is always a great debate about the famous traffic lights. It is a house brand that Juan Tapia invented, limited to the economic area, and that was later exported to all areas, and that other media have also adopted. The management was clear yesterday to dedicate the red light to Junts per Catalunya for its decision to reject the amnesty project, and the reasons are more than explained in our editorial yesterday. The problem that arose is who to give it to. The spokesperson in Congress was Miriam Nogueras, but it was clear that the decision was not hers alone, but that of Carles Puigdemont. However, he does not have any organic position in Junts, so the last person responsible is the general secretary, Jordi Turull.
The explanation is relevant because deep down this is the big problem that Junts has today. The dependence that the formal leadership of the party has on Puigdemont is very great. And he, from Brussels, rules, but is not involved in the day-to-day decisions of the party, which generates a certain disorganization. And so the rupturist soul of President Laura Borràs and the pragmatist of some leaders such as former Minister Jaume Giró who defended remaining in the Government coexist in the leadership. The anger experienced by the last executive following the expulsion of deputy Cristina Casol from the party is the best example of this. Everyone knows that the division of both factions will end in confrontation, but now it is time to temporize. The departure from the party of former councilor Miquel Sàmper, recorded yesterday, is very significant in this environment.
This lack of definition of leadership has also influenced Jaume Collboni's decision to opt for forming a government in Barcelona with Esquerra instead of Junts. The socialists did not trust that they would not end up leaving the City Council as they did from the Generalitat.
It is indisputable that Puigdemont is the leader of Junts. The most logical thing is that this leadership is perceived in the party and also in the important decisions that Junts has to make shortly.
