Autumn, as we know it, has taken longer than usual to make an appearance. But this week, falling rainfall and temperatures are already beginning to replace in many parts of the country the heat and sunny days of a summer that seemed to have no end.
The aroma of roasted chestnut, one of the most representative products of the season along with sweet potato and pumpkin, is also beginning to invade the streets of cities like Barcelona, where this year there will be more street stalls than ever dedicated to this fruit. Barcelona City Council has granted 58 licenses, a figure that had not yet been reached since the start of the new century.
Compared to last year, there will be 15 more stops on public roads where roasted chestnuts will be sold, which will be distributed throughout all the city's neighborhoods. Traditionally, these are served in paperines, a paper rolled into a cone that vendors usually fill to the top with this fruit.
There will, therefore, be no shortage of places to buy this autumn classic, which is believed to have already been consumed in ancient funeral feasts, in which only legumes and dried fruit were served. These meetings had a symbolic part of communion with the dead, explains the Barcelona council: while the chestnuts were roasted, the attendees prayed the rosary to remember their deceased relatives.
