When the sun sets on the Empordà plain

In La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can relive the first sunset of the year 2024 from Bellcaire, in Baix Empordà, where we can admire the landscape of the Empordà plain under an intense glare.

Like most of the towns on the Empordà plain, Bellcaire is perched on top of a small hill overlooking the plain, which, to the north, had been occupied by the Bellcaire pond.

This pond, like many others in the area, was drained in the mid-18th century in order to use the land for cultivation.

It was the writer Josep Pla who baptized this portion of land in the Baix Empordà as the Empordanet, a magnificent landscape sheltered by the Montgrí, between medieval towns and beautiful fields.

The candilazo is a meteorological phenomenon in which the clouds in the sky show a wide palette of colors that ranges from pink to the most intense orange.

As part of the phenomenon of dispersion of sunlight, in the morning and afternoon hours, when the sun is closer to the horizon, the light that reaches the Earth is soft tones between red and orange. In a certain way, when this light passes through the clouds, it illuminates them and could be said to color them with those tones.
