In this photographic report in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we are going to learn in detail about the 15 corbels of the Paeria de Cervera and their meaning.

Cervera is the capital of the Segarra region. With just over 9,200 inhabitants, it is characterized by the richness of its cultural and monumental heritage. Not in vain a total of 11 of its monuments are cataloged as Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN) by the Generalitat of Catalonia.

These are the castle (XI century), the church of Sant Pere el Gros (XI century), the walled enclosure (XVI century), the parish of Santa Maria (XIV-XV centuries), the Paeria building (XVII- XVIII), the University (18th century), the historic center, the Union (20th century) and the castles of the aggregated centers of Castellnou d'Oluges, Prenyanosa and Malgrat.

In this small report we want to highlight a unique element of the Paeria or Casa de la Vila de Cervera, a baroque building that presides over the Plaza Mayor.

It can be considered one of the most original achievements of Catalan Baroque civil architecture. On the façade of this majestic building, the five corbels located under each of the three balconies stand out, each group representing the virtues that merchants should have in the market, the five senses and motifs related to the prison.

The balcony on the right represents the market, with these five characters:

On the central balcony the corbels represent the five bodily senses, since with all of them you can make a good market.

The balcony on the left is dedicated to the prison:

If you liked this review of the meaning of the corbels of the Paeria de Cervera, it is also worth getting to know the Carreró de les bruxes and the magnificent Regional Museum with a floor dedicated to the champion Marc Márquez, the Tro de Cervera.
