Iñaki Urdangarin becomes a free citizen this Tuesday once the sentence of five years and ten months imposed by the courts for various corruption crimes as a consequence of his involvement in the Nóos case has expired.

The ex-husband of Infanta Cristina was sentenced by the Palma Court to six years and three months in prison for embezzlement, prevarication, fraud against the Administration, two tax crimes and influence peddling, although the Supreme Court reduced his sentence by five months. by exonerating him of falsehood in a public document.

The punishment led her to enter the Brieva women's prison (Ávila) on June 18, 2018, where she remained until January 2021, a period in which she obtained permission to volunteer a few days a week at the NGO El Hogar de Don Orione, dedicated to serving people with disabilities in the Madrid municipality of Pozuelo de Alarcón.

The former brother-in-law of Felipe VI was later transferred to the Social Integration Center (CIS) in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) to undergo the reintegration program for those convicted of economic crimes and his last stint in prison was in Zaballa (Álava). In March 2022, he was paroled after serving two-thirds of his sentence and found a job at a law firm in Vitoria, where he met his current partner, Ainhoa ​​Armentia.

After this relationship came to light, Urdangarin separated from Cristina de Borbón in January 2022 after almost 25 years of marriage and last January they announced their divorce.

At 56 years old, the former Duke of Palma lives in Vitoria with Armentia in an apartment near that of his mother, Claire Libaert. The ruling in the Nóos case acquitted Infanta Cristina, although she was ordered to pay 136,950 euros as civil liability for profit. Once the sentence has been completed, Urdangarin will maintain his criminal record until five years have passed if he does not commit a crime again.
