Agents from the Barcelona Urban Police have opened fire to kill an individual who attacked them with a knife. The man, as a result of the gunshot wounds, had to be admitted to the hospital in critical condition. The events occurred this Sunday afternoon in an apartment on Costa Brava Street, in the Bon Pastor neighborhood, in an area close to the metro stop and the neighborhood market.
The Urban Police have received a notice through the emergency telephone number 112 in which they were informed that there was a very upset man in a home, who was brandishing a knife with which he was harming himself and with which he had also injured his dog. . A patrol of agents has gone to the house to attend to the individual, but they have found a surprise attack against them, according to sources from the City Council.
The notice had been registered in the police database as assistance for a suicide attempt. However, when they went to meet the individual, he lunged at them with the knife, so the agents responded by opening fire on him to repel the attack. “The officers had to use their firearm against a person who attacked them with a knife,” a spokesperson for the Urban Police justified.
In total, the agents fired a total of eight shots, of which four hit the man's body, according to police sources. The agents immediately called the SEM – Servei de Emergències Mèdiques – who went to the home to assist the affected person and transfer him to the hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.
The Mossos d'Esquadra have taken charge of the investigations to clarify the facts and determine whether the shots fit the assumptions of proportionality, congruence and opportunity established by the protocols. The Internal Affairs Unit of the Urban Police (UDAI) has also opened reserved information to analyze the case.
