Ulabox closes its online supermarket after being acquired by the Czech group Rohlik

Ulabox has lowered the blind after more than 12 years of activity. The Barcelona company, one of the pioneers in online orders for fresh supermarket products, has made the decision after being acquired last year by the Czech group Rohlik, which wanted to land in Spain under the Sezamo.es brand, absorbing the activity of the Catalan brand.

"We will serve the last orders on March 31. This is not goodbye, it is a see you soon because we will continue working on the launch of Sezamo.es in Barcelona to present a new, much more solid proposal," he said in a Linkedin publication. Jaume Gomà, co-founder of Ulabox, who runs Sezamo.es in Spain.

The Czech company had ambitious plans in this country, where it planned to invest 50 million euros in its landing, starting first in Madrid and later growing in other large cities in Spain. His plans included hiring 200 people, opening a warehouse in the Spanish capital and inaugurating a digital hub in Barcelona with more than 50 workers. In the Catalan capital, Ulabox already employed around twenty people last year.

After the announcement made today by Gomà, it is clear that the group's plans have been paralyzed. Like the rest of the companies in the digital sector, Rohlik has slowed down its growth plans due to the demands of investors, who ask startups for profitability. The company is considered a unicorn as it is valued at more than 1,000 million.
