Two activists bare their torsos next to the German chancellor to ask for the Russian gas embargo

Two activists stripped naked from the waist up next to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday to call for a German embargo on Russian gas imports, according to German media reports.

They had "Gas Embargo Now" written on their torsos ("Gas Embargo Now," in English), as can be seen in the photographs of the incident released by media such as the tabloid "Bild."

The two young women took advantage of a moment in which Scholz posed with the citizens who wanted to be photographed with him, on the occasion of the German Government's open day, which is being held this weekend.

The security forces immediately intervened and took them away, shouting slogans; For his part, the chancellor remained unperturbed and did not abandon the pose he had adopted in the midst of the two women.

Before the incident, Scholz answered questions for an hour from citizens who had come to visit the Foreign Ministry, many of which revolved around the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis.

The chancellor affirmed that the problem related to gas supply will be solved, he hopes, by the end of 2023, when the terminals for the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projected on the German coast have come into operation.

The reduction in the supply of Russian gas through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which is only operating at 20% of its capacity, has led the German government to take a series of emergency measures to guarantee supplies for the winter.

For the moment, the Executive has refused to support an embargo on Russian gas since, it argues, the sanctions against Moscow are designed with the aim of causing more damage to Russia than they inflict on the country that imposes them.

However, during the meeting with the citizens, Scholz once again reiterated his commitment to Ukraine and stated that a "peace dictated by Russia" and that does not have the approval of the Ukrainian government and people is "unacceptable".
