Turull postpones any decision on the future of Borràs in Junts

The sentence of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) that condemns Laura Borràs will not have any effect on the organization chart of Junts per Catalunya. "We will not waste a minute talking about Junts, nor will our political life mark us," said the formation's general secretary, Jordi Turull, yesterday after publicly expressing his support for the party president and stating that it is a case of lawfare “manual”.

In Turull's opinion, it is an "unfair sentence because the investigation and the trial have been unfair." With this axiom, and with the tagline that the sentence is not final, the leader avoided going into assessing the content related to corruption of the TSJC resolution. "We will not enter to assess paragraphs," he stressed. “We all have to respect all the procedures. There are people who skipped the class in which the presumption of innocence was explained, ”he added.

In the party statutes approved last summer, it is indicated that until the sentence is final, the internal guarantee bodies should not assess whether it is a case of lawfare or not, and what consequences or sanctions there should be in the event of a conviction. for crimes related to corruption, which are classified in the “very serious offenses” section.

Taking advantage of this reasoning, the leader of JxCat considered that the sentence, without being final, cannot be made to "take effect", especially when Borràs has already announced that he will resort to other judicial instances.

Thus, the leader of the post-convergent ranks settled any debate about the president of the party, although that does not mean that Borràs does not have detractors within Junts. But the truth is that with the municipal elections on May 28 just around the corner, addressing the situation of Borràs within the party is not an ideal situation and, for now, that matter has been postponed.

In any case, faced with a sentence of four and a half years in prison -with the inclusion of a request for pardon to prevent him from going to prison-, there are those who see it as more complicated for some movement to be produced later on by those sectors that consider that the president should resign from her positions in the leadership of the party so as not to harm the project. A penalty of that magnitude did not enter the pools of anyone in the game.

Another matter is what can happen in Parliament, where the rest of the formations agree to request the resignation of the leader. Turull yesterday avoided commenting on what steps they will take in this area beyond trying to prevent "interference" from the Central Electoral Board, to which various groups have already submitted their writing. But, at the same time, he did not give rise to voices like that of Aurora Madaula or that of former president Quim Torra –both very close to the president–, who advocate not aspiring to the presidency of the Chamber and leaving the seat of you delete "At this stage, the party organs will adopt the decisions that must be made," Turull asserted. "We will not talk about substitutions until we see ourselves in a substitution scenario, and the decisions will be made in the party's bodies," he reiterated.

In the pragmatic sector they believe that if they manage to change the pace in the Catalan Chamber and recover an institutional figure such as the presidency, the role of the president of the formation will gradually lose strength.
