Three earthquakes hit Afghanistan amid rescue operations

An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude and 10 km deep shook Afghanistan for the third time this Monday, specifically the western part of the country, 37 kilometers from the city of Herat.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), this earthquake is preceded by one measuring 4.9 and another measuring 4.7, all in the midst of rescue operations for victims after the earthquakes that devastated the area on last Saturday.

In fact, the epicenter of the last and most intense earthquake of the day is located a few kilometers from the Zindah Jan district, also in Herat, where hundreds of volunteers are searching for survivors or the lifeless bodies of the missing. No damage has been reported at this time.

It all started last Saturday when up to a total of seven earthquakes (two of them measuring 6.3 degrees) hit the northwest of the Afghan country, leaving, according to the Taliban administration, more than 2,400 dead and 2,000 injured.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 600 houses were destroyed or partially damaged, affecting 13 villages and a total of 4,200 people.

This is one of the worst catastrophes of this nature that are remembered in Afghanistan and the country is currently overwhelmed, with hospitals saturated and waiting for nations and international organizations to respond to the emergency call.
