In The Photos of La Vanguardia Readers we can see in detail the spectacular roof and skylights of the Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover de Terrassa, designed by the architect Lluís Muncunill.
It is an industrial modernist building that is currently the headquarters of the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia. A must visit.
Construction began on the old factory on Rambla d'Ègara in 1907 and was inaugurated after a little over a year, according to the museum.
El Vapor (a name that comes from the use of the steam engine as a driving force) included the entire industrial process of wool transformation, from its entry into tufts to its exit in finished fabrics.
The museum has a total surface area of 22,200 m2, of which 11,000 m2 correspond to the former production hall, rectangular in plan, of the Vapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover.
This large room, which currently houses the museum's main exhibitions, is covered by a characteristic sawtooth-shaped ceiling, as can be seen in the photographs.
The usual straight forms of this type of roof were reinterpreted by Muncunill with 161 vaults, of the Catalan flat brick type, bell-shaped, which are supported by 300 cast iron columns, which also served as downspouts and as support for the mud flaps. (the devices that transmitted the power of the steam engine to all the machines in the factory).
