The nearly 101,000 companies in the province of Barcelona had a turnover of 257,054 million euros in 2020 (11% less than in 2019), which represents 81.8% of the total Catalan turnover. The study that has been presented today radiographs the productive structure of all the counties, identifying the main companies in the province. The report, which was explained by the Deputy for Economic Development, Tourism and Commerce of the Provincial Council, Eva Menor, shows a global vision of the regional productive fabric based on the annual accounts that companies present to the Mercantile Registry.

The turnover of the province of Barcelona in 2020 was reduced by 11% compared to 2019, going from 288,942 to 257,054 million euros. For the 2021 financial year, the deputy pointed out, the turnover is estimated at 286,142 million euros, 11.3% higher than that of 2020 and 1% lower than that of 2019.

Regarding the per capita turnover of 2020, this was 44,979 euros, 10.6% lower than that of 2019.

By region, all decrease in turnover except Osona (1%) and Moianès (0.8%). The decline of Barcelonès (-13.7%), Baix Llobregat (-12.7%) and Maresme (-11.5%) stands out. In 2021 it is estimated that commercial turnover could show a recovery with an increase of between 10 and 13%".

“The variation in turnover between 2019 and 2020 shows the impact that the pandemic had on the different economic activities. Thus, only six sectors of the 38 analyzed increased their turnover from 2019 to 2020”, Eva Menor remarked.

The high increase in retail food and drink trade stands out (15.7%). Next, agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing (7.4%); the wholesale trade of household products (6.4%); financial and insurance activities (2.5%) and retail ICT, domestic and cultural use (1.9%). Retail trade in non-specialized establishments maintained the turnover (0.3%).

On the contrary, the hotel industry was the sector that lost the most compared to 2019, -53.2%, followed by artistic, recreational activities and other services, with a reduction of 45.2%. At a distance, with reductions of over 20%, are the retail trade of automotive fuels (-24.9%), and motor vehicles and other transport materials (-25.6%).

Despite the pandemic, 22 of the top 25 companies with the highest turnover in 2019 remained in 2020. The three that lost positions were Vueling, which went from a turnover of 2,446 million euros in 2019 to 594 million in 2020 and dropped from fifth position to number 33; Grifols, which went from 1,970 million euros in 2019 to 556 million in 2020 and fell from 7th position to 36th; and Damm, which went from 806 million euros in 2019 to 650 million in 2020, and dropped from 25th place to 30th,

In contrast, Condis (from 783 million euros in 2019 to 895 million in 2020), Danone (from 768 to 790 million) and Sanofi Aventis (from 761 to 760 million euros) entered the list of the 25 companies with the highest turnover. euros).
