The tension over the squatters redoubles in the upper part of Barcelona

Up to five people appear running down the street. They go with sticks, motorcycle helmets. One even with a bottle of liter in his hand held upside down. Metallic blows are heard, shouts in the background, neighbors shouting "cowards". They run after someone or something. It is not known. Nor who are the ones who hide their faces behind the helmets.

But the images, recorded next to the squatted La Ruïna building but whose recording date is unknown, have circulated on social networks like wildfire and have redoubled the tension that has been experienced for weeks in the upper part of Barcelona. The context is all the controversy that has been taking place for months around this squatted building and that of El Kubo, also in the Sant Gervasi-La Bonanova neighborhood.

In the early hours of Saturday, the Mossos d'Esquadra appeared in the surroundings of the squatted buildings of El Kubo and La Ruïna, responding to an incident allegedly reported by a neighbor. In the reports of the Urban Guard there is no action in the area. According to some testimonies, some kids who came from a party making a fuss passed in front of the doors of the squatted buildings from where several people came out to rebuke them. The police report does not contain any major altercations and incidents.

But one image was enough for the spark to jump again in an area of Barcelona where for months the squatting of homes has been living in great tension, an issue that has also jumped into the electoral debate.

For months now, the squatted buildings of El Kubo and La Ruïna have been a source of controversy. At the end of March, the eviction of the former was scheduled, but a court suspended it. From then on, there have been several clashes between the squatters of both farms and the police, as well as the parade of various political parties that have incorporated the issue into their electoral speeches, using them as a battle horse.
