The silence of Sant Jeroni de la Murtra

Sant Jeroni de la Murtra is an old Gothic monastery located in the Valley of Belén, in the Serralada de Marina and in the Canyet district of Badalona (Barcelonès).

It belonged to the Hieronymite order and was founded in 1416 by the Barcelona merchant Bertran Nicolau, on the old house of Ça Murtra.

The monks inhabited it until 1835, the date of its partial burning. Affected by the confiscation of Mendizábal, the monastery was auctioned and became a holiday colony for many years.

In 1947, Francesca Güell i López bought the main lot to convert it into a place of solitude and silence and also to achieve its restoration.

The Rest Area of this monastery is due to Francesca Güell, who thought that today's world, where life is hectic and noisy, needs places where people find rest for their souls. Here you live "an experience of solitude and silence, free and respectful."

This rest is open to any person, without distinction of place of origin, beliefs or way of thinking. It is "an interreligious and intercultural space." As indicated in its presentation, "solitude and silence are a source of creation, therefore, the monastery is especially appropriate for artists and intellectuals."
