The sentence of two rapists is reduced from 27 to 11 years due to the delay in judging the case

Two rapists sentenced to 27 years in prison for attacking a young woman in Mallorca have had their sentences reduced by more than half, to a total of 11 years, due to the delay with which Justice has processed this case. The Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands has agreed to this reduction after accepting an appeal presented by the defense of the accused. The defense lawyers assured in the appeal that almost seven years passed from the first statement of the detainees until they were informed of the ruling.

The sentence confirms that undue delays occurred and makes the reduction of the sentence effective. The two rapists were sentenced to 13.5 years in prison for the rape of a young woman in a field in the municipality of Calvià. With the new sentence and the reduced sentence, the two men have been sentenced to five and a half years in prison each. At the time they were also sentenced to compensate the victim with 50,250 euros.

The attack occurred in 2016, when the young woman, accompanied by a friend, met the attackers and a third man who could not be identified in a bar on Passeig Marítim in Palma. After having several drinks together, the men offered to give the two girls a ride.

However, the accused changed direction once they were on the outskirts of Palma and entered a road in the countryside, where the young woman was raped by the three men, but one of them remains unidentified. In the sentence it is confirmed that the woman did not offer resistance for fear that the men would attack her and in the trial she stated that she felt coerced. The men assured that the relationships were consensual, but the Court sentenced them to 13.5 years in prison given the seriousness of the events.
