Badalona will host the next basketball Copa del Rey, which will be held from February 16 to 19, 2023 at the Palau Olímpic, after the agreement reached between the city council and the ACB.
The Copa del Rey will return to Badalona 38 years later after the edition played at the Pabellón de Ausias March in the 1984-1985 season and for the first time in its history it will be played at the Palau Olímpic in Badalona, with capacity for 12,000 spectators.
According to the ACB statement, the competition will be played "in one of the cradles of Spanish basketball", a city that "breathes" basketball and "has promoted many players and coaches who have been protagonists in the history of the league".
The 2023 Copa del Rey will be played by Joventut Badalona as the host team, in addition to the seven best classified teams from the first round of the regular season of the Endesa League. The mayor of Badalona, Rubén Guijarro, assured after hearing the news that this Monday is "a historic day" for Badalona, since "a claim of decades comes true and a dream comes true".
"Badalona deserves the Copa del Rey like nobody else and we will be the best hosts. This is the positive Badalona in which we believe, the unstoppable Badalona that excites", commented Guijarro.
