The nuclear submarine 'USS Rhode Island' leaves the naval base of Gibraltar

The conservationist group Verdemar Ecologists in Action has denounced that the North American submarine 'USS Pasadena' has docked in recent days at the Rota naval base (Cádiz), in the same way that the 'USS Rhode Island' has left this weekend the Gibraltar naval base.

In a statement, Verdemar has denounced the continuous presence of nuclear submarines in the Bay of Algeciras and in the Strait, in the case of "strategic attack submarines that use unknown routes to act by surprise".

The environmental group continues to insist that the Nuclear Emergency Plan and the activation of the GOVRA (Environmental Radiological Surveillance Groups of the Navy) be activated, since "these floating bombs can cause an accident of unforeseeable dimensions."

Verdemar denounces that it is not the first time that damaged submarines have docked at the Gibraltar military base and repairs have been made without any security measures.

Since HMS Tireless was repaired in 2001, specifically the reactor cooling system, more than a hundred submarines have passed through, many of them with problems.

Environmentalists recall that the nuclear submarine of the British Royal Navy 'HMS Ambush' collided in 2016 with a merchant ship in the Alboran Sea, during training exercises.
