The night watchmen of Mataró return to patrol

The Mataró (Maresme) City Council will give continuity to the project of nighttime or serene civic agents started last year. The service will start up again on July 3 and the team will be made up of 10 people (2 coordinators and 8 night watchmen) who will work in pairs. They will carry out support tasks to increase the preventive, inspection and assistance capacity at night of the security, civic and public space services.

The fundamental task of the night watchmen will be the detection and communication of incidents in the public space through the continuous presence in the territory. They will have predefined and coordinated routes with the Local Police,

Its main functions will be the detection of situations of incivility, conflicts and disturbances in the public space that cause coexistence problems; the location of inconveniences, incidents and breaches of schedules of public establishments; -detection of risk situations for people and monitoring of vulnerable or at-risk people in priority action areas; support for preventive programs of a cross-cutting nature in the area of ​​coexistence and civility, with tasks to raise awareness among citizens and the closing and opening of public spaces

The night watchmen will work from Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., between July 3 and December 3. During the weekends they will pay special attention to the nightlife areas and, during Les Santes, they will concentrate their presence in the spaces where the events of the Festival take place.

During the pilot test carried out in the second semester of 2022, the night watchmen carried out a total of 3,112 performances. Among these actions, the most numerous were related to communication of situations related to waste (701), personalized attention (698), static monitoring points for noise disturbances (431), alcohol consumption on public roads (417), homelessness (337), damage to street furniture (280) and parks and gardens (141).
