The lessons not learned from the fall of the Berlin Wall

What happened as a result of confusion would end up changing the course of Europe forever. It all started with the surprise press conference given by an official from communist Germany on the afternoon of November 9, 1989, in which he confirmed that citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany were authorized to leave the country "immediately." .

A few hours later, thousands of East Berlin citizens were already crowding in front of the wall that divided the city for almost three decades. They wanted to cross it and knock it down, and so they did, toasting with champagne and without police repression.

The fall of the Berlin Wall opened an era of hope and progress throughout the continent that, since the start of the war in Ukraine, seems even more distant. What remains of the spirit that guided those years? What lessons can we draw?

The video that heads this article tries to answer these questions with the vision of the head of International of La Vanguardia, Ramon Aymerich; the special envoy to Berlin during the event, Xavier Mas de Xaxàs; and the current correspondent in the German capital, María-Paz López.
