On a cliff 300 meters above the Tagus River stands a mass with spectacular views. The Salto del Gitano viewpoint over the Tagus River is the best known and most photographed in the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve.

In this snapshot in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can see its peculiar shape, which some say resembles the figure of a Civil Guard, with its tricorn hat and everything in the shape of one of the rocks.

This has given rise to several stories and legends, as it was a place formerly frequented by bandits and thieves. From one of these stories comes the name Salto del Gitano.

This place is ideal to observe the majestic flight of griffon vultures. And the impressive rock wall of Peña Falcón is one of the oldest rock formations on the planet and is where one of the largest populations of griffon vultures in Europe nest, as well as black storks and a wide variety of birds.

Biosphere reserve territories such as Monfragüe were born in 1976 at the proposal of UNESCO to achieve a harmonious integration between human beings and nature, promoting sustainable development.
