The Government appoints the first woman brigadier general of the Air Force

Colonel Loreto Gutiérrez Hurtado, of the Corps of Engineers of the Air and Space Army (EA), has been appointed this Tuesday brigadier general by the Council of Ministers. She is the fourth woman to be promoted to the highest job in the Spanish Armed Forces, and the first in the EA.

With this appointment, she joins the group of women generals inaugurated in 2019 by another engineer, the current Major General Patricia Ortega, of the Army Polytechnic Engineers Corps. In 2021, she was promoted to General Auditor Begoña Aramendía, of the Military Legal Corps, and the third was on July 14, María Teresa Gordillo, of the Military Intervention Corps.

For the acting Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, this appointment is "satisfaction" and a sign that "we are on the right track." "There are a lot of women and colonels who are classified to be able to become generals and a significant effort is being made."

Hurtado, was until now the head of the Transport Aircraft and Maritime Patrol Section of the Logistics Support Command of the EA and has several decorations, such as the Cross and Commendation of the Royal and Military Order of San Hermenegildo and four Crosses for Aeronautical Merit with a white badge, and has also participated in various detachments abroad.
