The other hit of the summer, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and veteran director Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, will maintain a tight competition in the best drama film category.
The film about the creator of the atomic bomb accumulated eight award nominations, while Scorsese's epic Western received seven, the same number of chances to win a Golden Globe that Lanthimos' science fiction comedy will have.
Gerwig, Nolan, Scorsese and Lanthimos will have a fierce battle for the best director award, which also includes less experienced directors such as Bradley Cooper and his second film, Maestro, or Celine Song with her debut film Past Lives.
Leonardo DiCaprio, and his leading role in Killers on the Moon, Cooper with his interpretation of the conductor Leonard Bernstein and Cillian Murphy in his role as the theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer will compete for the Golden Globe for best drama actor.
Other artists nominated at the gala are Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Meryl Streep (who in this edition broke her record as the most nominated actress in the history of the awards by accumulating 33 throughout her career), Timothée Chalamet, Willem Dafoe or Nicolas Cage, among others.
