The former director of the center where 64 elderly people died says it worked "correctly"

The former director of the Fiella de Tremp residence, where 64 of the 142 residents died in 2020, declared this Monday in the Tremp court that while she was working, until she went on sick leave on November 27, everything was working "correctly." " and blames the nuns who served the users for the Covid-19 outbreak that affected the center.

The lawyer for the private prosecution, Xavier Prats, explained once the hearing was over that the former person in charge of the residence had defended in court that the workers' accusations were "totally false and unfounded" and that "everyone knew the contingency plan" and had PPE. The former director has testified in the case for an alleged crime against the safety of workers.

The person then in charge of the residence has answered only the questions asked by the judge and the defense. According to the private prosecution, Xavier Prats, he denied being to blame for the outbreak and said that while he was in charge of the center "everything worked correctly" and that "all the accusations are totally false and unfounded."

He has defended before the judge that there was a working job bank at the center and that the staff knew the contingency plan. He has also stated that Covid-19 positive patients were isolated and that there was PPE for everyone.

The former director has given an exculpatory version, which she has justified by claiming that she has a training as a social educator and that, therefore, she had no knowledge of medicine or nursing. Instead, she has blamed the situation that occurred inside the center on the nuns who took care of the users.

The version given by the former director of the center totally contradicts what the residence workers declared in 2022, who stated that during the outbreak there was "chaos" and people asking for help in the hallway. They confirmed that no one knew the contingency plan, that they did not have PPE and that they only had one mask a week.

The former director of the center has testified for the first time in court for one of the two cases that, together with the former head of Sanitary Hygiene, she has open for the death from covid-19 of 64 residents during the pandemic. She declared for the case that she is investigating an alleged crime against the safety of workers. The other pending is for a crime of reckless homicide and degrading treatment for the death of the elderly.

For her part, the then head of Sanitary Hygiene was also summoned to testify in the Tremp court. The woman, who is currently admitted to a residence for nuns in Gipuzkoa, testified by video call and has availed herself of the right not to testify.
