The forest of the cathedral of Girona

I captured this photograph for The Readers' Photos of La Vanguardia around 11 pm in the Devesa park, in the Fires de Sant Narcís in Girona, in an image in which you can see how the cathedral stands out beyond the sea of trees.

La Devesa is the largest urban park in Catalonia, located between the Ter, Onyar and Güell rivers. It is made up of 40 hectares of greenery, nine of which are walks covered by vaults created by the crowns of the century-old plane trees.

A devesa is generally fenced and wooded land, usually used for pastures, hunting and the use of firewood. It had this function before becoming a walking place in 1767, as it is today.

The short distance between the tree specimens has forced them to grow more in height than in width and this has caused them to reach exceptional heights of up to 60 meters.

This park brings together around 2,500 plane trees. The central part of La Devesa stands out, the Passeig de la Sardana, an ideal place to relax among the trees.

For its part, the cathedral of Santa María de Girona is located at the highest point of the city. It has the widest Gothic nave in the world, with a total width of 22.98 meters.

The temple hides many jewels beyond its dimensions, details of the interior and exterior that are worth discovering and rediscovering at different times of the day. Thus, at the top of a spectacular staircase with 90 steps there is a compendium of five centuries of history.
