Unemployment registered in the offices of public employment services increased by 20,077 people in January in Andalusia in relation to the previous month (2.89%) to 715,017 unemployed, according to data published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

This total number of unemployed is the lowest figure in a month of January since 2008. Since the beginning of the comparable historical series, in 1996, unemployment has risen in January most of the time in Andalusia (22 times) while it has fallen on five occasions, with the rebound in the last month being the smallest increase since 2022. In the last year, unemployment accumulated a decrease of 33,128 unemployed, which represents 4.43% less.

The Andalusian Government has indicated that the rise in unemployment is common at the start of the year due to the end of hiring in the services sector, and has predicted a similar behavior in February and a downward trend in the spring.

In statements to the media, the general secretary of the Public Employment and Training Service of the Board, Victoria Lomeña, has indicated that February will be affected by fluctuations in the service sector and agriculture and, therefore, until spring will reduce unemployment, "as usually occurs in a financial year not affected by exceptional circumstances," he specified.

The rise in unemployment in January is repeated in the statistics in the last 19 years, since in the first month of the year there is a return to the unemployment lists of workers who have been hired during Christmas and a rebound effect that is The one that causes this economic increase, as reflected in the fact that 90% of the newly unemployed are provided with services, and the end of the oil campaign in Jaén also influences the increase, he explained.

At the national level, the number of unemployed registered in the offices of public employment services rose by 60,404 people in January in relation to the previous month after the end of the Christmas campaign, which represents an increase of 2.2% in terms percentages.

The increase in January of this year is lower than that experienced in the same month of 2023, when unemployment increased by 70,744 people, but it is above that registered in 2022 (17,173 unemployed). Except for that year, the increase in unemployment in January 2024 is the lowest in this month since 2017, when it increased by 57,257 people.
