The Eden of spring in the Sierra de Queralt

It is worth taking a good excursion in spring through these spectacular mountains of the Sierra de Queralt, an Eden of spring, as can be seen in the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia.

It is a natural space located in the center of the Berguedà region and which forms the limit between the smooth forms of the Ebro basin and the steepest reliefs of the Pyrenees. This space is included within the municipalities of Berga, Castellar del Riu and Capolat.

The orientation of the mountain range is from east to west and is limited to the south by the road from Berga to Sant Llorenç de Morunys (BV-4241), to the east by the mountain range of Castell de Berga (or Sant Ferran), by to the west by the Portet and to the north by the Demetge stream.

The easternmost part of the mountain range stands out for the cliffs of Queralt, which include the Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Madrona and the surroundings of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Queralt.

On the southern slope, marine limestones originating during the Upper Campanian (about 80 million years ago) outcrop extensively, which contain fossils of invertebrates (for example, corals, rudista bivalves, or echinoderms).

On the northern slope, these limestones are covered by a series of strongly compressed shales, limestones and sandstones that correspond to the Tremp formation.

The genesis of these materials occurred in coastal and fluviolacustrine wetland environments between 72 and 56 million years ago.
