The dismantling works of the coastal railway line begin

The dismantling of the coastal rail route began three years after the activation of the Mediterranean corridor. Work began this week to remove the old train tracks between the Hospitalet de l'Infant and Cambrils. Adif expects to finish the works this summer and when the space is recovered, the Town Halls will project different uses.

In the case of Mont-roig del Camp and Vandellòs and the Hospitalet de l'Infant, the project for a greenway has already been drawn up and the works are expected to be put out to tender by the end of the year. In Cambrils, on the contrary, it will be chosen to be the starting point of the future tramCamp. At the moment, the City Council has submitted allegations to the project to restitute the land where the tram line is expected to be located.

Adif operators have begun the preliminary work to remove the set of old train tracks, in disuse since 2020. Thus, the sections have been divided and cut to be able to later transport them by truck. Once these crossings have been removed, the ballast present on the tracks will be removed to leave the space free.

Other railway elements, such as the catenary, were removed coinciding with the start-up of the Mediterranean corridor. The forecast is that the works will be finished this summer.

The mayors of Mont-roig del Camp and Cambrils agree when it comes to celebrating the start of the works, although they also regret the delay in these. Despite having shared the same railway route for years, the municipalities have different projects for the released land. Together with the Hospitalet de l'Infant, a 20-kilometre greenway will be created in this space that will link Torn beach with the old Cambrils station.

As explained by the mayor of Mont-roig del Camp, Fran Morancho, the project has already been drawn up and could be put out to tender at the end of the year. The forecast is that the greenway will become a reality "the sooner the better", despite the fact that an exact date for its start-up has not been specified. The document convinces the mayor, although he points out that it could be a "more urban" intervention than what is being proposed.

“It can always be better, we believe that it was a very good opportunity to transform the space, especially in Miami Platja. They bet that it would be a more intensive intervention, but it will be a space for walking or cycling. We have achieved what we were after, not with the quality that we would have liked, but well”, she pointed out.

In relation to the works that are being carried out at the moment, Morancho has demanded that Adif work to avoid coinciding with Holy Week, a period in which the population grows in this urban center and its urbanizations.

In the case of Cambrils, on the land that will be released another proposal different from the greenway of the neighboring municipalities is projected. It is the tramCamp. At the moment, the City Council has responded with allegations to the land restitution project in Adif. The mayor Oliver Klein has indicated that the tramCamp "cannot go back", and has pointed out that the understanding between Adif and the Generalitat has caused the processes to take three years. In this sense, Klein has defended that the new layout between Cambrils, Salou and Vila-seca will provide "cohesion" in the territory and unite these urban centers in a "constant and non-polluting" way.
