The Canary Islands demand urgent action after the death of three migrants

The Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, has regretted the death of three migrants who were traveling in a cayuco that was intercepted yesterday 170 miles from El Hierro, from which fifteen others were rescued. .

In an audio sent to the media, the counselor stated that the Canary Islands "cannot remain impassive in the face of this drama"; For this reason, she has considered it urgent that the Spanish and community authorities "act so that not one more life is lost in the ocean."

Candelaria Delgado has also stressed that it is necessary to offer young people from migration-sending countries opportunities to develop their life projects in their places of origin.

The cayuco was located this Saturday afternoon by the catamaran 'Knot Working' about 170 nautical miles southwest of La Restinga. The catamaran alerted the Tenerife Rescue Center of the presence of an irregular vessel in which there could be dead people.

For this reason, the Helimer 206 and Helimer 204 helicopters were activated, while the closest ship, the 'Lagoa', was diverted to remain in the vicinity of the cayuco. Once on site, Helimer 206 rescued eight people with hypothermia, hunger and thirst; and Helimer 204 lifted seven other migrants who were conscious and oriented.

Both air resources transported the occupants of the boat to the island of El Hierro, while the three deceased remained in the canoe, who were also evacuated.
