The drought has turned the Sau swamp, literally, into a cemetery of earth and stones. And it is a literal description because, among the ruins of the old town of Sant Romà that were exposed when the water disappeared, are the niches of the cemetery submerged with the commissioning of the reservoir.
These photographs in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos are one more example of the persistent drought that Catalonia is suffering and which means that Sau is only at 4% of its capacity.
Church, cemetery, houses in ruins, the towers of the old mill, you can guess streets... The drought allows you to rediscover the corners of the old town of Sant Romà de Sau, walking through where there used to be water and now only dirt and dust.
The reservoir, inaugurated in 1962, covered the town of Sant Romà de Sau, the remains of which, especially the bell tower of the Romanesque church, are visible when the level of the dammed water is low.
This reservoir is part of a system of three swamps (along with those of Susqueda and Pasteral) that unites the counties of Osona, in the province of Barcelona, and La Selva, in the province of Girona.
