The activation of the moral

If in the last elections the political strategies of the left and the right were focused on appealing to emotions, understood as a war of flags, in the next ones we are going to observe that more influence will be sought on the duty of conscience, now understood as a war of values, and master the moral foundations to mobilize their blocs. The moral foundations can be synthesized in six, as the psychologist Jonathan Haidt proposes: care, justice, freedom, loyalty, authority and purity. These foundations are considered central, innate and common to the whole of society.

The dispute to control which side the moral foundations fall on, to the left or to the right, can be observed in the collision between both blocks in relation to the social/electoral consequences of the law of only yes is yes or the law for equality real and effective of trans people and for the guarantee of the rights of LGTBI people, which are an example of political collision, as is the renewal of the judiciary or the reform of the crime of sedition and embezzlement.

At this time, the collision between the left and the right seeks to sidestep the moral scope by focusing everything on legal and technical problems; but in the next elections both the right and the left will use morality to reaffirm their positions.

The problem that these initiatives seek to address arouses an intense public debate because many people have the perception that they only satisfy certain social groups. This battery of legislative and judicial initiatives of the Government have the virtue of causing people to position themselves, not only politically, according to their ideology, but also in relation to their moral conscience; On the contrary, there is a danger that the laws and reforms that are to be promoted will be exposed to the manipulation of morality, as a consequence of the legal problems derived from the interpretation of the norms that are not elaborated correctly, not reaching solid political agreements in within the coalition government to promote them and not having broadly agreed on their scope with the citizens.
