The 25 most beautiful and strange images of the northern and southern lights of 2023

The observation of auroras in areas far from the poles, even in some parts of Spain, has attracted the attention of curious people and scientists in recent months. The images of this type of phenomena captured in areas such as Extremadura are surprising but they are very far, in terms of quality and beauty, from those achieved by expert photographers in polar areas.

The photography and travel blog Capture the Atlas has been dedicated for years to selecting what are possibly the best images of the auroras and now presents the Northern Lights photographer oft he year collection with the 25 best images of the northern lights.

This compilation is always published in December, coinciding with the northern lights season, and aims to inspire and share the beauty of this natural phenomenon.

This year's list includes images taken around the world in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Finland, Norway, Iceland, the United States, Canada, Russia, Australia and New Zealand, by 25 photographers of 13 different nationalities. . This year the selection includes two Spanish photographers: Luis Cajete and Marc Marco.

As we approach solar maximum (the period of highest solar activity during the Sun's 11-year solar cycle), we are seeing northern lights at lower latitudes and images of auroras in unique places where they have not been photographed before. In this edition, we have examples such as images of auroras in Wales, Germany, Dolomites of Italy, continental Australia or Death Valley National Park.

The quality of the image, the story behind the shot and, in general, the ability of the photographs to inspire are the main factors in selecting the images each year. The article not only helps other photographers who want to photograph the northern or southern lights, but also brings our universe closer to the general public to learn and discover the magic of this spectacle of nature, highlight the promoters of this selection.

The northern lights season runs from September to April in the northern hemisphere and from March to September in the southern hemisphere, with the best time to see and photograph them during the autumn and spring equinoxes due to the orientation of the earth's axis.

Dan Zafra, editor of Capture the Atlas, searches and selects these photographs throughout the year, not only looking for images taken by some of the most renowned photographers in the world, but also looking for new talent and places where it is rare to see the aurora. Boreal.
