The 23/24 income campaign is here: you can now request the reference number

The new income campaign, in which the 2023 personal income tax is settled, is taking shape. With just a few weeks until its start, the Tax Agency (AEAT) already allows you to obtain the reference number, a key that will be used to access the draft and present the procedure.

The new service to obtain the number "is now available", it is noted, and will allow the management of this campaign and previous ones to be carried out, the AEAT reported this week. The announcement has been accompanied by a warning: "The reference number you previously obtained is no longer valid, so you must obtain a new one." "As of March 12, 2024, the references obtained during the 2022 campaign (the last one) cease to have effect," it is reiterated.

Thus, to obtain the new number, the process can be completed through the official application of the Tax Agency or from the web portal, following this link. One of the most common ways to obtain the reference number is with the data from box 505 of the income tax return from the previous campaign, in which the income for 2022 was settled. The Treasury has a step by step to achieve it if you have last year's income on hand.

The process can be tedious. To avoid requesting a reference number, you can choose to register in the Cl@ve system, another way to identify yourself to the tax authorities.

The reference number brings the campaign closer. The calendar was already announced a couple of months ago by the Tax Agency, and the great novelty is that the start date is brought forward compared to previous years. Thus, this year's personal income tax return starts on April 3 and ends on July 1.

From prior appointments to deadlines for direct debit, there are several more dates to take into account. The first, on April 3, when the campaign officially starts and the moment from which the draft can be consulted and the declaration submitted, either through the mobile application or the Renta Web portal.

At the end of that month, on April 29, another special day arrives. From that day on, you can make an appointment to be answered by phone to prepare your income tax return with help. The calls will start on May 7 and will run until June 28.

Another day marked on the calendar is May 29. At that time you can make an appointment to be attended in person at the offices of the Tax Agency and collaborating entities. Appointments will be given for June 3 onwards, with the last ones assigned for July 1.

It must also be taken into account that the declarations that have results to be entered can be submitted until June 26 if they are with direct debit.

Once the campaign concludes, on July 1, the returns sent will already be submitted after the deadline and sanctions could be imposed on the taxpayer.
