Thai police call for Daniel Sancho to be charged with premeditated murder

The Thai police have assured this Wednesday that they have sufficient evidence to accuse Daniel Sancho of premeditated murder, after having confessed last weekend that he had murdered and dismembered a well-known Colombian surgeon named Edwin Arrieta on the island of Koh Phangan, in the southwest of the country.

It has been the head of investigation of the Thai island police station who has confirmed this information. "We have enough evidence and now it is up to the court to start the trial," Somsak Nurod told AFP.

The son of actor Rodolfo Sancho appeared before the judge this past Monday and is now in provisional detention in the Thai prison in Koh Samui, where he will have to remain in isolation for ten days to comply with the anti-covid protocol in force.

The alleged murderer arrived in Thailand as a tourist on Monday, July 31, to meet the victim. Several days later, Rodolfo Sancho's son went to the police to report the disappearance of the plastic surgeon. After his statement, the authorities found parts of a corpse in a landfill and in the sea, which later became known to belong to Edwin Arrieta.

The subsequent investigation led the authorities to find evidence that would incriminate the Spanish chef, such as the images from a video surveillance camera that show Sancho and Arrieta together on a motorcycle days before the disappearance, or the images that detail how Sancho bought a saw , some knives and other utensils to dismember a corpse.

But on Saturday, August 5, Daniel Sancho confessed to the crime and accompanied the investigators to different locations to reconstruct the event step by step. At the moment the authorities affirm that the motives of the crime are not clear.

During the interrogation, the young Spaniard confessed to having hit Arrieta in a fit, causing his head to hit the bathtub. Later he dismembered the corpse into 14 parts, which were thrown between the landfill and the sea, where he used a kayak that cost him 1,000 euros. Despite this statement, the police assure that all the evidence indicates that it was a premeditated and programmed crime.
