Tarragona will close the beach showers due to the drought alert situation

The Tarragona City Council has announced that it will close the showers and footbaths on the beaches this summer due to the new drought alert situation. A measure that will be added to the rest of the restrictions imposed by the ACA once the Official Gazette of the Generalitat de Catalunya (DOGC) is published.

The Councilor for the Environment, Eva Miguel, has announced the measure after a meeting between the different areas involved, where it has also been proposed that the soaking of Sant Magí be cancelled. Miguel believes that "it makes no sense to propose this type of recreational activity with all the waste of water that it entails." Despite this, she assures that it is a "political decision" that must be validated by the new government.

Among the set of measures proposed by the ACA in those municipalities that are on alert due to drought, the following stand out: the limitation of irrigation in green areas, the prohibition of filling ornamental fountains and swimming pools, as well as the reduction of services urban cleaning, among others.

Miguel has taken advantage of the announcement of the new measures to call for citizen responsibility. He also recalled that "failing to respect these restrictions will imply a serious infraction" with fines ranging from 100 to 500 euros.

At the moment, the forecast is that Tarragona will remain on alert throughout the summer, without reaching "a catastrophic scenario that implies water cuts in the houses", as explained by Miguel. Despite this, the councilor has stressed that "we have to begin to become aware as a population" in the current context of "serious" climate change.
