Sympathize with the death penalty

Soccer teams play in Qatar. How would we react if it was announced that a whole team would soon be executed? Indignantly. Well, well: eleven are the people who wait there on death row. Qatar has repeatedly refused to accept the United Nations moratorium on the application of the death penalty.

Very alert: there is a danger that she will return when you least expect it. Unfortunately, in our schools there is a percentage of young people who approve of capital punishment. Families and teachers: do something. Society is not sick, but it is conformist and there is a danger of contagion from the virus of anger. Democracy itself shows the first symptoms. The day that Trumpism deceives by saying that everything is better by exterminating the undesirables, that day many countries, with infected opinion, will reintroduce the death penalty.

Delia Pérez, from Texas, the sister of a man unjustly sentenced to death, was recently in Barcelona. In this state, 570 sentences have been applied. In the world there are 33,000 people on death row. In 2021, 2,400 were executed. It is true that abolitionist countries have increased; but there are 56 retainers of this macabre justice. And even if only one were left, the scourge of capital punishment would continue to deny that Homo sapiens is already socialized. The death penalty confuses justice with revenge and punishment with derision. It is the cruelest act, because it is done in the name of the law and with the approval of a part of the population.

If outrageous is a crime, more outrageous is the crime of the death penalty. He kills in cold blood, in a normalized way and, worst of all, justified by many. Capital punishment is a crime for natural reasons (deletes life), legal (life is a legal good), moral (life is an inalienable right) and religious (life belongs to God). The death penalty is immoral and also useless: it does not correct the crime, nor does it compensate, nor does it prevent it. It is another crime, and our duty, in a society with few ethical references, is to remember it and make it remembered.
