Sánchez agrees with Sunak to accelerate the negotiation on Gibraltar for "shared prosperity"

Before meeting this Thursday at Moncloa with the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, Pedro Sánchez had a telephone conversation this morning with the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, as reported by the Spanish Executive. A very relevant conversation, in his opinion, especially to speed up the negotiations on Gibraltar in search of "shared prosperity" in the area after Brexit.

During the conversation, Sánchez and Sunak reviewed various aspects of "the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries", as reported by Moncloa, and regarding "the need to take the last steps in the negotiations on Gibraltar as soon as possible". Both leaders have agreed, thus, "on the importance of reaching an agreement that is beneficial for shared prosperity in the area."

Pedro Sánchez and Rishi Sunak have also reviewed various issues on the international agenda, and in this sense "they have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's illegal and unjustified aggression, and have addressed President Zelenski's peace plan." The head of the Spanish Executive is scheduled to meet on Friday of next week, May 12, with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, at the White House.

Likewise, Sánchez and Sunak spoke about cooperation on issues such as energy security and the opportunity that Spain and the United Kingdom will have to deal with these and other issues within the framework of the upcoming meetings of the European Political Community. On July 1, in addition, Spain will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The call was made "at the request" of Prime Minister Sunak, as highlighted by Moncloa.
