Racism and xenophobia continue to be the main reasons for discrimination in Barcelona

Racism and xenophobia are, for the fifth consecutive year, the main reasons for discrimination, with 185 reported situations, LGTBI-phobia series, with 129 cases, and health, with 120 cases. The reasons for discrimination that follow those mentioned are language (90), aporophobia (82), disability (68), gender (51), religion (19), ideology (17) and age (6). ).

LGTBI-phobia maintains figures similar to previous years

During 2022, a total of 129 LGTBI-phobia situations have been registered: 85 related to sexual orientation and 31 against transsexual people, 9 less than the previous year. 33% of the cases involved verbal aggression and more than 30%, physical aggression. 67% of the situations occurred in the public space by individuals (91 cases).

More discrimination for health reasons

Regarding discrimination for health reasons, discriminatory cases have tripled and there have been 120 situations, especially those related to mental health (70) and HIV diagnoses (31).

A higher number of coercive practices have been identified in healthcare praxis, such as involuntary admissions, verbal coercion or situations of housing exclusion. Most of these cases of discrimination have occurred in the public administration (59) —in hospitals, customer service offices and courts—, followed by private entities (43) and individuals (19).

The Discrimination Observatory, next to the most vulnerable groups

The Office for Non-Discrimination (OND) offers information, advice, support, psychosocial care, training and awareness services to guarantee human rights at the local level. During the year 2022, the OND and the entities of the SAVD Table carried out 1,091 support and accompaniment services for victims and a total of 130 complaints.
