November closes with 24,000 fewer unemployed, but with a drop in membership in the hospitality industry

November ends with a significant reduction in unemployment, 24,573 fewer unemployed people, which represents one of the largest drops in unemployment recorded in this month in recent years, but November also records a drop in affiliation. 11,583 jobs are lost and in this case the main culprit is the hospitality industry.

With respect to unemployment, its reduction by 24,573 people represents the second largest drop in a November if the years of the pandemic are excepted and brings the number of unemployed to a total of 2,734,831 people, the lowest figure in this month since year 2007. When analyzed by sector, unemployment has been reduced in all economic sectors, with a special impact on Services (17,335 people) and much further away, in Industry, Agriculture and Construction. By sex, the decrease in female unemployment stands out, with 15,900 more unemployed, which doubles the decrease in male unemployment.

Upon learning of the data, the vice president and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, stated that "unemployment drops by more than 24,000 people in a month in which unemployment traditionally increases. Unemployment among women and young people is singularly decreasing," to then call on autonomous communities and employers "to hire women."

For his part, the Secretary of State for Employment, Joaquín Pérez Rey, has taken advantage of the presentation of these data to influence the controversy that his ministry maintains with the Economy over unemployment benefits. Pérez Rey has highlighted the surplus in unemployment collection, which already amounts to 5.7 billion euros, thanks to more stable and better-paid employment. "With this surplus in unemployment collection, there is no reason to justify any cuts in the unemployment system. The system is healthier than ever," stated the Secretary of State in a message addressed very clearly to the Ministry of Economy. He also added that "in Spain the unemployed are not subsidized, but rather their rights are recognized", and that the Ministry of Labor does not have as its ideology the idea of "subsidizing the unemployed" and "creating employment by punishing the unemployed." .

On the other hand, the total number of contracts registered in November is 1,356,000, of which 41.5% are of an indefinite nature. Of these 562,000 permanent workers, 41% are full-time, 35% are permanent and 24% are part-time.

In this way, the total number of affiliates exceeds 20.8 million, which is the highest figure for the month of November in the entire historical series.

If the seasonally adjusted figures are examined, that is, separating the seasonal and calendar effects, which are preferred by the Ministry of Inclusion and Social Security, 10,350 new affiliates are registered. Despite the increase, the slowdown in job creation is also evident here. This increase is well below what is usually usual in the month of November. Specifically, it is the worst figure since 2012, if 2019 is excluded.

When analyzing affiliation by sector, the main cause of the negative balance for the month appears in average affiliation. It is the hospitality industry that, with the aforementioned drop of 115,000 members, is decisive, and they cannot fully compensate for the good performance of education, which adds 38,000 new jobs, or also, although at a distance from commerce and vehicle repair, construction and the manufacturing industry.

Meanwhile, the average affiliation of women continues at maximum levels, with more than 9.8 million contributors, which represents 47.2% of all workers.

The percentage of members with an indefinite contract stands at 87%, its historical maximum, a percentage 17 points above that existing before the labor reform. In this way, the temporary employment rate remains at 13%.
