Morocco prepares graves to bury migrants

Operators of the Sidi Salem cemetery, on the outskirts of the Moroccan town of Nador, bordering Melilla, today prepare several graves where the authorities plan to bury the dead migrants during the massive attempt to gain access this Friday to the Spanish city in North Africa. .

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) published today on its Facebook account an image of graveyard workers digging graves in the cemetery, stating that deceased migrants will be buried there.

Security sources confirmed to Efe that this is the place chosen to bury the migrants, and although they did not specify the date on which they will be buried, they indicated that some legal procedures must be completed before doing so.

The graves are located in an area isolated from the rest of the graves, where today there are twelve graves, half of them excavated previously and the other half this Sunday. The workers explained that tomorrow they will continue digging pits.

The attempted access of around 2,000 people to Melilla, the most numerous and violent recorded in recent years, resulted in 23 dead migrants, according to the Nador authorities, and with dozens of wounded, of which 18 remain hospitalized , in addition to a Moroccan agent, always according to official information.

According to humanitarian organizations, the number of fatalities in the attempted assault would be higher. The Moroccan authorities have not yet reported the nationalities of the deceased or the process that will be followed to bury them.

In a joint statement, ten Moroccan and Spanish humanitarian organizations ask the Moroccan authorities to identify and return the remains of the victims to their families, in collaboration with the migrant community.
